Captain of the NHL team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dion Phaneuf has been suspended 2 games for a check from behind on Kevan Miller of the Boston Bruins. Phaneuf will not play on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings and Thursday against the St. Louis Blues, and loses more than $66,000 in salary.
Phaneuf hit Miller in Sunday's loss to the Bruins at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. While Phaneuf hit Miller from behind, there was no boarding penalty called. Miller left the game, but Bruins coach Claude Julien wasn't worried about Miller's condition.
Phaneuf had a phone hearing Tuesday with NHL vice president of player safety (and former player) Brendan Shanahan and got suspended for 2 games. This is the Maple Leafs' fourth suspension this year.
